Robert asks…

What list of foods contains high carbohydrates?

What list of foods contains high carbohydrates?
What list of foods contains low carbohydrates?
How do I get in my fat-burning zone?

Author answers:

Starchy and sugary foods such as pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, crisps, sweets.
Carbohydrates are engery and if they are not burnt they will turn into fat in the body.
Low carb foods are foods high in protein such as fish, meat, eggs, vegtables and fruit.
You will need to exercise untill you start sweating such as aerobics, running etc.

Steven asks…

What are a list of examples of carbohydrates?

My mother recently found out from her Dr. that she has high cholesterol and they told her not to eat carbohydrates. I need a good complete list of examples of carbohydrates. She wants to take this list to the grocery store to do her shopping to restock her home. Thanks.

Author answers:

Carbohydrates are sugars and starches. Pasta, bread, candy, sugar, soda, flour, pancakes, popsicles, pop-tarts, cereal, fruit (fresh and canned) potatoes, even some vegetables are high in carbs like peas, and corn are some examples, but carbohydrates are in almost all foods except meats and cheeses.

You have to eat SOME carbohydrates, even with high cholesterol. The ones you should be eating are what are called COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES: Whole grain breads, or whole-grain flours, oatmeal, unpolished, wild or brown rice, vegetables with the skins or peels still on, (like unpeeled potatoes, green beans, pea pods, etc.,) and nuts of all kinds–especially almonds. These carbs will HELP LOWER cholesterol.

What the doctor probably told her was not to eat SIMPLE SUGARS and simple carbohydrates–white flour, white sugar, pastries, most white-flour pastas, any processed foods with high-fructose corn syrup.

CHECK THE LABEL of the foods you buy. The lower the Total Carbohydrate numbers are, the better. Compare foods in cans and boxes when you buy them so that you get the lowest numbers. While cutting down on the simple carbs is always a good idea, it is not a good plan to cut out ALL carbohydrates from your diet. You can’t sustain that kind of diet for long, and it has a bad rebound effect when you stop eating like that–any weight you lose on it will come back with a vengeance.

Rule of thumb: the fewer processed foods you eat, the fewer bad carbohydrates you will eat. Make things from scratch instead–and eat your vegetables as raw as possible to get the benefits of the fiber and keep the starches from turning to sugars. Switch from white bread to whole grain bread and any bread products (even buns for hamburgers) do the same. Check any labels for high-fructose corn syrup and buy as few products with it as possible. Eat out as little as possible.

Good luck to her.

Richard asks…

where can I get a list of complex carbohydrates?

It has been recommended that I consume complex carbohydrates and I think pototoes, yams and rice are on the list HOWEVER I am also trying not to eat anything white ie; white bread, white rice, white pasta……..any suggestions would help.

Author answers:

Hers a few for you:
There are two types of carbohydrate: complex and simple.

Complex carbohydrates

Complex carbohydrates are often referred to as starch or starchy foods. They are found naturally in foods and also refined in processed foods.

Complex carbohydrates as natural starches are found in:

o bananas
o barley
o beans
o brown rice
o chickpeas
o lentils
o nuts
o oats
o parsnips
o potatoes
o root vegetables
o sweet corn
o wholegrain cereals
o wholemeal breads
o wholemeal cereals
o wholemeal flour
o wholemeal pasta
o yams.

Complex carbohydrates as refined starches are found in:

o biscuits, pastries and cakes
o pizzas
o sugary processed breakfast cereals
o white bread
o white flour
o white pasta
o white rice.

Simple carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates are also known as sugars. They also exist in either a natural or refined form.

Natural sugars are found in fruit and vegetables.

Refined sugars are found in:

o biscuits, cakes and pastries
o chocolate
o honey and jams
o jellies
o brown and white cane sugar
o pizzas
o prepared foods and sauces
o soft drinks
o sweets and snack bars.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar) cause tooth decay.

The difference between complex and simple carbohydrates

All carbohydrates form glucose when digested. Glucose is transported around the body via blood and taken into cells to be converted into energy.

The pancreas gland in your abdomen secretes the hormone insulin which controls the uptake of glucose by your cells.

If you have any excess glucose, this is converted into glycogen which is stored in the liver or in fat around the body.

When your body needs more energy, a second hormone called glucagon is secreted by the pancreas. This converts the glycogen back into glucose, which is then released into your bloodstream for your cells to use.

This means the body’s glucose (sugar) metabolism is a cycle of glucose, insulin and glucagon reactions.

* The slower the release of glucose and hormones, the more stable and sustainable the energy levels of the body.

* The more refined the carbohydrate, the faster the glucose is released into your blood. This can cause peaks and drops in your blood sugar level, and less stable energy levels in the body.

Complex carbohydrates provide a slower and more sustained release of energy than simple carbohydrates.

Nancy asks…

thyroid storm?

what are the symtoms if you are having a thyroid storm?

Author answers:

Thyroid storm is considered a medical emergency. Some of the symptoms of thyroid storm include heat intolerance, diaphoresis (excessive sweating), tachycardia (rapid heart rate), hypertension (high blood pressure), arrhythmias, diarrhea, vomiting, jaundice, severe agitation, seizures, and coma.

Graves disease is the most common cause, but surgery, I-131 radiation therapy, DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis), trauma, and pregnancy-related toxemia can also cause the condition.

As I stated before, thyroid storm is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY. If you suspect you are experiencing thyroid storm, please see medical help immediately!

Steven asks…

Thyroid storm?

What do you guys know about a thyroid storm. Can it occur if a hypothyroid person stops taking their thyroid medication (ie synthroid)? Or does only occur when there is too much thyroid hormone in the body?
thanks

Author answers:

No, a hypothyroid person can’t have a thyroid storm. A thyroid storm is a result of a flood of thyroid hormones, way more than normal hyperthyroidism. By definition, if you are having a thyroid storm, you are hyperthyroid at the time. Stopping synthroid will lower your thyroid hormones, not raise them , let alone to the levels that will cause a thyroid storm.

A thyroid storm can result from untreated hyperthyroidism, or by radioactive iodine ablation of the thyroid, just to name a few.

A thyroid storm is a true emergency. It is deadly, and you need to get to the ER immediately.

Michael asks…

Thyroid Storm??

I’m a medical doctor, and have just diagnosed a 43 year old woman as having a thyroid storm. Multiy organ failure followed. Ant other Doctors out there seen this?

Author answers:

Only one in over 25+ years, and it wasn’t one of those biggies. The things I remember most are that the staff thought I was nuts treating before I had labs, and knew I was crazy for giving propanolol to a patient in uncompensated heart failure. Sounds like you have an ugly one. Good luck.

Lisa asks…

what is an easy way to lose weight in 2 weeks?

i have a little over 2 weeks to lose up to 10 pounds. im 14 and heard that sit ups are useless. are they? and any other info about weight loss i would really appreciate:) also: its mostly in the stomach area that i need weight loss in.

admin answers:

1 Dietary control and exercise. It’s true what they say – all you need to do is watch what you eat, and expend more energy than you consume. It’s really that simple. You can quit reading this list now, you now know everything you need to know and didn’t need to fork over $500 for the privilege of me telling you the secret of losing weight. You don’t need to read a 4,000 page book, you don’t have to buy a tape series, you don’t need to stay up late at night to watch infomercials to understand this basic premise. It’s 100% true.

2 Change your lifestyle. If you’re calling this a “diet,” then you’re going to gain all the weight back (and more) within a few months of losing it. Diets do not work. Diets are temporary. When you change your dietary lifestyle, however, you’re changing your habits – and you’re putting yourself on track for long-term / continued success and weight maintenance. Don’t ever tell anybody you’re on a diet – ever. I’m speaking from experience, here – a reformed low-carber. Worked out well for a while, but ultimately failed because my entire lifestyle didn’t change (permanently).

3 Join an online support group. In my case, I created my own – FatBlasters. It’s essential that you not feel alone, and reaching out to friends (new or old) is typically a smart move. I just heard about PeetTrainer, but didn’t know about it when I began down the road to weight loss. You have to know that others are out there for moral support – they know things that you couldn’t possibly know, and they’ve probably been “in your shoes” at some point in the past (or present). Share stories, laughter, tears, successes, and failures – share them. There are thousands of communities out there, so keep looking until you find the one that fits you.

4 Take before and after photos. I know it sucks to see yourself as a chunky monkey (sorry, that’s what I called myself – if only to get myself motivated to meet my weight loss goal). However, there’s no easier way to illustrate your progress. The “after” photos are far more fun to capture and share, admittedly. Find yourself on Flickr! It’s good to see yourself how others see you. Do you like how you look? In many ways, Flickr helped me lose weight.

5 Hire a substitute teacher. Don’t reach for the brands you know and love immediately – or without thinking first. Eggs are “good” for you, but consider using egg substitutes instead (in fact, many restaurants will let you order lower calorie foods). There are countless “lower” alternatives for you to try. If something different doesn’t taste good, by all means – find a better substitute, or eat less of the original. In some cases, the substitute may be worse for you than the regular version of the product. The good news is, healthier choices are silently replacing their “normal” counterparts – and they taste just as nice.

6 Start reading labels. I know it sucks, but you have to do it – and there’s no way to avoid this tip. If you don’t know what you’re putting in your mouth, you’re flying blind. Don’t assume, either – triple-check the ingredients list and serving sizes. You must rely on yourself for this; nobody else is going to be able to lose the weight or do the math for you. It’s not that complicated a task, but it will require effort. If nothing else, just pay attention to the calorie count.

7 What’s so funny about bovines? If you like cheese, you must buy the Laughing Cow brand, and keep several of the suckers in stock at all times. The individually-wrapped wedges make for excellent snacks, and are wonderful when melted over just about anything edible. I’d be careful about straight-up American cheese, though – it’s oil, but not necessarily as good for you as (say) a slice of cheddar would be. I have yet to find something as calorie-light and filling as Laughing Cow (I don’t know how they do it).

8 Tell your family. You’re not going to lose the weight alone, even if you ARE alone in losing the weight. If you’ve got a family at home, talk to them about it – initially, not incessantly. Let them know what you’re going to do, and that you want (and need) their support. If you don’t let them know, you’re running the risk of them inadvertently sabotaging your efforts. You want them to help you get to your goal(s). You want them to share in your happiness when you’ve made it past a certain mark. Who knows? Maybe some of your new habits will rub off on them and they’ll become healthier people, too?

Mary asks…

How can I slim down in 2 weeks? Not lose weight as such, but be smaller!?

I’m in a fashion show in 2 weeks time (for charity) and I’m worried I won’t fit in the dress they’ve picked! It’s for the bridal section. It’s a wedding dress (really) with a boned corset top. It was very tight when I first tried it and unfortunately I’m one of those people whose weight fluctuates quite a lot. I could do with losing 2-3 inches+ from my stomach/waist in 2 weeks.

A friend had suggested the “juicing diet” but will this work for me? I don’t need to lose weight, just inches. I don’t want the kind of diet that will take the weight straight off my breasts as that isn’t going to help me!

Thank you!
By not wanting to lose weight but lose inches, I mean I’m looking for ways to stop bloating, water retention, etc. Not looking for a lecture on how I should have known about this weeks ago! (Which actually, I didn’t.) I found out last week and have bad hormones that make me bloat and retain water. But thanks.

And a genuine thank you to everyone else!

admin answers:

Still isn’t healthy, no matter how you look at it, but the best thing you can do to drop five to ten pounds or so, (two or three inches is a lot), is a mild diuretic added to your diet SHORT TERM. Leek broth, (buy leeks, cook them down, drink the broth, eat the leeks) works wonders for french women! Basically, don’t stop drinking water because this will actually make you retain more, but pulling the excess water out of your system and reducing inflammation in your body is the quick fix you’re looking for. Look into the Percone Promise. Great book and a healthier process. Good luck with that dress, and just promise that you’ll eat after!

Carol asks…

How to lose weight in 2 weeks?

i really dont want to hear how unhealthy it is cause i already know i just would like a way to lose 15 to 20 pounds of fat in 2 weeks. Also what is the most weight you have lost in 2 weeks?

admin answers:

I would try this workout. At the same time you will be gaining muscule and burning fat. So its awesome.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Two 5 pounds weights.
* means one 5 pound weight in each hand.

If you don’t have two 5 pound weights try using water bottles full of water.

Workout:
Stretch
*20 Bench Press x3
20 squats x3
*20 side arm lifts x3
20 crunches x3
20 push-ups x3
*20 lunges x3
20 leg lifts x3
Walk for 30 mins
Stretch

Stretching before your workout helps you not to pull a muscule during your workout.

Stretching after your workout helps you not be AS sore afterward.

I try to do this everyday, but I’m sure you would get results doing this only 2-4 days a week. I recomend everyday.

Eat 1500 calories a day and drink 8 glasses of water daily.

You will lose weight and tone up!

I’ve lost 6 pounds and I’ve only been doing it for a week!

You can do it! I know you can!

You will be sore. And it will hurt but you can do it.

Don’t be scared to add more excercises of more reps.

Hope this works for you!

Charles asks…

Does anyone have any easy or fast tips to losing weight?

Okay.
Does anyone have any easy or fast tips to losing weight?
I really want real answers.
I know that I should exercise but is there ways so I won’t be so exhausted. Do you get what I mean?

Are there any healthy diets?
If so can you give me some?

admin answers:

It’s easy and free!

Drink more water… You can use a water bottle and refill it through out the day. But drink about 4-6 bottles of water during the day
this will keep you hydrated, full and flush out your system

no fast food, boxed food (freezer food that comes in a box), or junk food, soda and candy. OK, you can have some, just not everyday!

If you cook meals at home do that instead of buying meals. Use fresh ingredients. It’s cheaper and healthier.

Run a few times a week. Even 10-15min every other day of easy jogging.

Easy!

Thomas asks…

Get ready to lose 10 pounds! By paying attention to the amount of food you eat, eliminating unnecessary sugar and fat from your foods and making sure you include absolutely delicious meals and snacks to keep your taste buds happy.

Use this easy-to-follow and super healthy diet plan to lose the first 10, the last 10, or any 10 in between! Because it’s a balanced and flexible program, you can stay on this diet as long as it takes.

Top Fast Diet Secrets

1 – Keep track of everything you eat and drink. No need to estimate calories – just write down the type of food or beverage and the amount.

2 – Cut your fat intake in half, which means half as much margarine or butter on toast, vegetables and your muffin, half the mayonnaise on your sandwich, and half the oil in the pan when you sauté foods. You get the idea!

3 – Limit the sugar treats to three times per week maximum.
Include good sources of protein at meal, chicken, fish, legumes, peanut, cottage cheese, eggs or yogurt.

4 – Eat at least one meatless lunch and dinner each week to reduce fat, increase fiber, and get yourself into the habit of building meals around whole grains, beans and vegetables.

5 – If you’re not currently using skim milk, go down to the level of fat content in the milk you use. For example, if you currently use two percent, use only one percent. If you insist on whole milk, try two percent.

6 – Eat at least two servings of fresh fruit every day. Choose whatever type of fruit is in season.

7 – Instead of fruit juice for breakfast or snack, drink water. Add a slice of lemon or lime for zest.

8 – Include two servings of vegetables with lunch and dinner, for a total of at least four servings per day.

9 – Choose one to two servings of foods made from whole grains with every meal.

10 – Shut off the TV whenever you eat – that includes meals and snacks. Studies show that we automatically eat larger portions when we snack in front of the tube, and typically those foods are high in fat and sugar, which means excess calories!

11 – Choose calories you can chew – that means only calorie-free beverages (except for milk) Sodas are loaded with empty calories, and fruit juices provide less fiber and vitamins per calorie than the fruit they’re made from.

12 – Plan ahead for meals and snacks so you know exactly what you plan to eat. Last-minute choice tends to be higher in calories and lower in satisfaction.

admin answers:

Cardio. =

Many people don’t realize just how important a well timed cardiovascular program is when it comes to eliminating body fat. Whether it’s early morning, late evening, the most important thing is that you just do it. Continuous cardiovascular exercise, such as running, walking, jogging, stair-climbing, or cycling, sustained for at least 30 minutes, will burn body fat no matter when you do it. However for the maximum benefits of fat loss you MUST ensure that you are performing your cardiovascular training first thing in the morning. You should consider getting up early and doing cardio before you eat your first meal – even if you’re not a “morning person.” Early morning aerobic exercise on an empty stomach has three major advantages over exercising later in the day.

Early in the morning before you eat, your levels of muscle and liver glycogen (stored carbohydrates) are low. If you eat dinner at 7 p.m. And you eat breakfast at 7 a.m., that’s 12 hours without food. During this 12-hour overnight fast, your levels of glycogen slowly decline to provide glucose for various bodily functions that go on even while you sleep. As a result, you wake up in the morning with depleted glycogen and lower blood sugar – the optimum environment for burning fat instead of carbohydrate. How much more fat you’ll burn is uncertain, but some studies have suggested that up to 300% more fat is burned when cardio is done in a fasted, glycogen-depleted state.

So how exactly does this work? It’s quite simple, really. Carbohydrate (glycogen) is your body’s primary and preferred energy source. When your primary fuel source is in short supply, this forces your body to tap into its secondary or reserve energy source; body fat. If you do cardio immediately after eating a meal, you’ll still burn fat, but you’ll burn less of it because you’ll be burning off the carbohydrates you ate first. You always burn a combination of fat and carbohydrate for fuel, but depending on when you exercise, you can burn a greater proportion of fat relative to carbohydrate. If doing cardio first thing in the morning is not an option for you, then the second best time to do it would be immediately after weight training. Lifting weights is anaerobic (carbohydrate-burning) by nature, and therefore depletes muscle glycogen. That’s why a post lifting cardio session has a similar effect as morning cardio on an empty stomach. The second benefit you’ll get from early morning cardio sessions is what I call the “after burn” effect. When you do a cardio session in the morning, you not only burn fat during the session, but you also continue to burn fat at an accelerated rate after the workout. Why? Because an intense session of cardiovascular exercise can keep your metabolism elevated for hours after the session is over. If you do cardio at night, you will still burn fat during the session, so you definitely benefit from it. However, night time cardio fails to take advantage of the “after burn” effect because your metabolism drops like a ton of bricks as soon as you go to sleep. While you sleep, your metabolic rate is slower than any other time of the day.

You might find it hard to wake up early in the morning and get motivated to workout. But think back for a moment to a time in your life when you tackled a difficult task and you finished it. Didn’t you feel great afterwards? Completing any task, especially a physically challenging one, gives you a “buzz.” When the task is exercise, the buzz is physiological and psychological. Physiologically, exercise releases endorphins in your body. Endorphins are opiate-like hormones hundreds of times more powerful than the strongest morphine. Endorphins create a natural “high” that makes you feel positively euphoric! Endorphins reduce stress, improve your mood, increase circulation and relieve pain. The “high” is partly psychological too.

Reward your self !
Dont punish… Run a block drink some juice, ride your bike, eat an apple

As for your stomach…
Abs are made in the kitchen!
Choose the foods you put in your mouth carefully…
Eat whole foods, veggies, fruits, grains, dairy, meat, and take vitamins
prepackaged processed foods have too much sugar salt fat and carbs in them forget diets, fads, and pills

EAT SMARTLY, EXCERCISE EVERYDAY, SLEEP WELL, AND BE SUPER HAPPY!
